I remember my first CHEACT conference. It was a winter conference with Doug Phillips in January of 2000. My wife placed her foot firmly in the small of my back and shoved me out the door. As I looked around the room during the first speaker session, I began to see that there was a vast religious right-wing conspiracy amongst our wives.

Doug's message was life changing for me. There are no other words to describe it. I don't think I would be involved with CHEACT were it not for the vision for my family (and yours) that began to unveil that day.

Soon after I that, I was drafted as the CHEACT Treasurer. Since then, my conference experiences have been decidedly different than most of you. I rarely get to listen to entire session anymore (unless I get to hold up the "count down" cards for the speaker). Instead, I get to announce them, then slip out for more fun things like pushing CHEACT memberships, turning strollers away at the door or explaining why you have to pay a full admission price, even if you just want to shop.

Many of you will remember my first conference as Chairman: the summer of no parking at Palmer. As I recall, the closest parking was at Austin High School - a mere two bus hops away… and the last bus hop deposited you a half mile's walk away from the auditorium, through some of the hottest temperatures I've experienced here in Austin. Needless to say, many of you decided to stay home that year. Thanks to those of you who toughed it out, and brought your own water.

Then the next year (last summer), we were all squished into facility with about one third the exhibit space as we have at Palmer, and an intermittent air conditioner, all for more money than we have ever paid for a facility. You seemed happy, but the many exhibitors that we turned away were not.

This year, we are back at Palmer… well, the NEW Palmer. We have a great lineup of nationally known speakers, scads of vendors, a men's only breakfast (don't tell the PGA), covered parking on location (for a small fee, so you might want to car pool), all the space we need… with air conditioning! AND, you can bring your kids this year! There are discounts for couples, families, volunteers and CHEACT members.

In short, we have planned a conference that will encourage, inspire, educate and outfit your home school.

So, please come, and bring some friends. You never know if this will be the conference that will change the course of your life forever.
