Just Call Me Jones
October 2002
This weekend saw me operating at both ends of our family's
spectrum. It began as a camping trip with my oldest son (11), where we
hiked over ten miles, took a moonlit dip in the raging Pedernales, fished
the banks with cool new lures and fended vicious raccoons off of our supplies.
Spending time drawing my sons into manhood is one of the hats I am beginning
to wear more often these days. But that was just Friday and Saturday.
Come Sunday morning, I was worshipping with my family
in church… until word was sent in that Noel's water broke. Yes, that water.
Eight days early. Remember the day new babies are born? Hurry up and wait.
We rushed home from church and waited. We walked a few miles, and then
waited. The boys and I watched "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost
Ark". Now, there was a man of adventure!
Remember how Indiana is first seen in the jungle of
South America wearing his leather fedora, unraveling the mysteries of
an ancient cave filled with a prized treasure? Next, we see him wearing
tweed and lecturing to a group of young college students. Before he can
finish, his colleague at the museum is waiting to introduce him to an
audience of government officials who desperately need his knowledge and
connections to keep Hitler from taking over the world. Then it is back
into the field (Nepal, Egypt, whatever his mission leads him) where he
puts his knowledge into action and saves the world with sheer grit.
Back to Sunday: after the movie, we walked another
two miles. Then waited. After getting all the kids down (one of them several
times), it was time to focus on labor. In the wee hours of the night,
we gave birth to one of the sweetest little girls you have ever laid eyes
on. The midwife arrived with four minutes to spare, but we were ready
with or without her. Life goes on with or without midwives (but thankfully
"with" this time!)
Like Indiana, I, too went back to civilized world
to give a college lecture - later the same day (at ACC, where I teach
part time). Just as he is an expert in archeology, I am an expert in information
systems (Ha!) The fieldwork may not be nearly as exciting, but seeking
to honor God in every area of you life requires tremendous faith, courage
and strength. Who knows what will be next? Taking life as He brings it
is a fantastic adventure!
OK, so no government officials required my assistance
today. It is tough to keep up with the (Indiana) Joneses.
