Your Public Library

November, 2001

Around CHEACT, we have been talking a lot about the Support Network available to central Texas homeschoolers. If you have been reading this column over the past few months, you will know that our focus this year was on reorganizing our operations to allow us to focus on our key relationships. Much of that work is underway, so it is time to begin planning our next steps.

About the time this newsletter hits your mail box, we will be holding a Leadership Conference. Unlike in previous years, we hope to begin a dialog with support group leaders during this conference. In the past, the day has focused on bringing leaders up to date on current homeschool issues around the state. This year, we want to facilitate cross-pollination amongst support group leaders, and to begin exploring ways that we can work together to encourage homeschooling for the glory of God in our region.

Besides support groups, another key player in the Support Network that we all rely upon is our public library system. We are becoming aware of public libraries that are homeschool friendly, and those that are not. CHEACT is in a position to establish and develop a positive relationship with this critical resource to our members. Toward that end, we need to hear from you. Please drop us a letter or shoot us some email with your ideas. What do you like about your library? What could be improved? What services to they offer that you think are essential to your home school?

I'd like to pull together a report card system for measuring how home school friendly each public library is in our region, then organize a grass-roots effort to help safeguard this fundamental resource in our community. As home schoolers, we pay taxes and deserve to be served by this institution. We also make choices about where to live based on the overall friendliness of the community toward our education decisions. I imagine most municipalities will want to know what we think.

What do you think?
